How they met
Claire and Luiz met in Philipsburg, Montana, in 2013. Luiz had been living there for a year when Claire moved there to work for the same nonprofit organization that had originally drawn Luiz there from Florida. With only about 820 people in Philipsburg, it was inevitable that their paths would cross eventually and, as Claire settled into the tiny town, they met through mutual friends.
They discovered their shared enthusiasm for exploring the rugged mountains that surround the remote town and spent much of their first summer together discovering new trails with Luizâs dog, Scout. When they werenât hiking, backpacking or climbing, they were cooking together, running races in Missoula, or enjoying the regionâs many hot springs.
As their first summer together flew by, they started thinking about their next adventure, and began the new year together in Brazil, where Luiz was born. They spent the next six months immersing themselves in Brazilian lifeâspending time with Luizâs family, camping on the beach, celebrating Carnaval, learning how to dance forroÌ, and hiking through mountains completely different from those theyâd left behind.
After coming home, they settled in Seattle, where Luiz began working for a new company and Claire immersed herself in local food system development. But a growing interest in farming and a year of hectic city life in Seattleâs Capitol Hill neighborhood led them to return to Montana.
Now in Missoula, about an hour from where they first met, they enjoy the best that Montana has to offer and are looking forward to sharing their life there with their families and friends this summer!
